Twenty Years of IBM by
Arnett Brown
This year,
the RTP IBM Club Ultimate League celebrated 20 years of organized play
in the Triangle. The League was formed in 1987 and was recognized as an
official IBM Watson Trophy event the following year. Teams were formed
by a draft for the first time in 1997.
Each Fall, six
to eight teams are formed from a pool of about 100 players for a 10 game
season and tournament, two nights a week. The IBM League is also one of
the few leagues where the teams present each other with a post-game cheer.
To commemorate
the 20th anniversary, special artwork was designed for this season's jerseys
and discs (the first time the IBM League has given discs to each player).
The designs include the team names of each of the league champions for
the first 20 seasons. On September 29th, a "reunion" pickup
game was held at Lake Crabtree, and a spirited game was played by both
current and former IBM Leaguers (and their children). Later that evening,
Julie Holloway and Anthony Burgess hosted a very well attended 20th Anniversary
party, which
included a display of pictures, team jerseys, and even video of past seasons.
Many thanks
go to all IBMers, alumni and friends who helped make the 20th Anniversary
season a memorable one.
TFDA strives to grow the sport
of Ultimate frisbee in the Triangle area and throughout North Carolina
by: 1) initiating and fostering youth programs in school and in recreational
settings 2) running adult Ultimate frisbee leagues 3) providing regular
venues and times for Ultimate frisbee activities 4) hosting tournaments
that feed into the Ultimate Player Association's championship series 5)
acquiring land for the development of a dedicated set of Ultimate frisbee
fields
